This course provides theoretical knowledge and simulated practice on the safe and effective care of someone's feeding tube whether that is PEG, NG or JEJ

Target Audience

This course is suitable for carers and healthcare staff wishing to care and manage someone’s bowel. It is a myth that only nurses can manage these, no, with the right training, all healthcare staff can handle feeding tubes competently.

Course Aims and Objectives

- Know the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system
- Understand the indications for a feeding tube and the different routes (incl NG, PEG and JEJ)
- List the different types of feeding tubes and why they may be used including skin-level button and long-lines
- Recite the complications of Enteral feeding tubes and how to avoid them
- Understand the theory of cleaning and maintaining the feeding tube
- Know how to safely administer feed and medication via the feeding tube
- Explain how to manage Emergency situations, including the use of a stoma plug
- Identify the recording requirements associated with Feeding tubes
- Understand the importance of infection prevention, safe handling of waste, and maintaining a clean environment to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and illness.
